How Did I Start My Own Business

I was working in a bank before I quit my job.  I wanted to spend more time with my kids when they were young.  I am a mother to two girls, now aged 7+ and 6 years old. I knew that I’d never get the chance back if I waited for a time in the future.

However, because I used to be so active, I got bored quite fast.  I began to look for ways to keep myself occupied.  For a while, I was a freelance designer (although I had no formal training) and sold my pieces to a manufacturing company.  Then, I ventured into jewelry making.  I stumbled upon the idea of setting up an online business, because I felt that there was a better way of selling my works.

My Journey In Online Business

I started my online business with making a lot of mistakes. I bought into the hype of making money quick.  I tried schemes to game the system.  I listened to advice that went against my gut.  Needless to say, a lot of these ventures went up in a puff of smoke.

While I had some moderate success eventually and would have been able to accomplish more, I decided to put a stop to it.  I switched gears to writing for my passion early last year.  In a way, my articles at Attraction Mind Map (http://www.AttractionMindMap.com) chronicle my personal journey.  In my personal journey, I had encountered setbacks.  I decided to commit myself to investigating into the root causes of my obstacles.  When I decided to tune into my inner self, I was led into areas that I have never explored before.

Watching “The Secret Movie”, which was about the law of attraction, a few years ago somehow resonated well with me, although I did not like the mlm-like compensation structures that came with its marketing promotion.  I took what I could learn and went on to studying how the mind works, quantum physics, energy healing and subsequently, expanding consciousness through spirituality.

Advice to Other Moms

Setting up an online business is like having a real business.  It requires hard work, persistence, a willingness to learn.  It is not as easy as what most people will like to assume.  It is not as easy as what internet marketing gurus would like you to believe.  You do not see the number of hours they have put in, when they first started their business.  I know.  Because I have personally interviewed a few of them behind the scenes off-stage.

What is true is however, is that it is easier to set up one as compared to having a physical storefront.  In the first place, there are no upfront huge rental fees.  Running costs are there but lower.  Therefore, you have greatly reduced business risks.

There are many ways to do business on the web.  You can set up an ebay business, become an affiliate for other people’s products, start an online store, create membership sites, become a writer, etc.  What is most important is to choose one that is aligned to your interests, values and purpose. What may have worked for someone else may not have worked for you.  After you have chosen one, then find the expert who can best teach you in that area.

In terms of internal attributes, focus and persistence is key.  It is easy to get distracted when someone else claims to have made a ton of money using a different model or technique.  It takes discernment to know that it may not be for you.

To succeed on the web, if you are having a blog, quality content is important.  Value is not created when you regurgitate stuff.  You need to make an impression, to stand out from the millions of blogs out there.  You can’t do this by scraping content.  Uniqueness is when you lend your personal perspective.

The web is also all about community.  You need to give in order to receive.  When you give, do so genuinely too.  You’d be amazed at the spirit of bloggers, even from far away, who will be there to support your efforts when you need them to.

Hi there Evelyn!

It was great reading your story – and it is interesting what you say about the time that goes into on-line endeavours – I find it quite time-consuming myself! You need to love it to do it, I think. And it’s all about community, as you say – well blogging is, anyway.

Cheers – Robin
