How to Podcast Using WordPress
Do you want to reach your audience in a different way? Perhaps you’re considering an audio or video podcast. If so, you can use your WordPress blog and a simple plug-in to make it happen.
What’s a Podcast?
Quite simply a podcast is an RSS feed, like your blog posts, that is delivered via audio or video. You can then list your podcast on directories. People can sign up to receive your new podcasts, like they do to receive your blog posts. The main difference between a blog post and a podcast is the medium. Nothing more, nothing less.
Step One: You Need WordPress
If you don’t have a WordPress blog, then it’s time to visit WordPress and sign up. Choose your domain name wisely as it will have an effect on how people find you.
Step Two: Choose Your Plug-In
You can simply search the WordPress site for podcasting plug-ins. Read the reviews and information about the various options. Make your choice and install. You can also search the web for options. Again, compare options. Read reviews. Look for user friendly choices. In general they plug-ins are all pretty basic. Avoid plug-ins that are old and/or have a lot of complaints about bugs.
Some podcasting plug-ins to consider include:
* PodPress
* Blubrry Powerpress Podcasting
* Podcast Channels
* Podcasting
Once the plug-in has been installed visit your admin panel and review the settings. You’ll likely be asked to:
* Set the title format – make it easy to understand with keywords in the title
* Upload an image – brand this to your existing blog and website for consistency
* Adjust the date or add the date – this is up to you.
Many of the default settings may be perfectly fine for your purposes. Simply review and save.
Step Three: Create your podcast
Whether you’re using audio or video you’re going to remember the basic rules of content – make it valuable. Make them want more. Give them a call to action.
Step Four: Upload Your Podcast
Open a new post like you would if you were creating a written blog post. Upload your media. If you’re using a tool like Feedburner then grab the URL for your media file and burn it. GoogleFeedburner is a great option with useful analytics.
You’ll have different options depending on the plug-in you’re using. You’ll generally have to check a box that stipulates this is a podcast. You’ll then be asked to provide information like length and type.
