M&Z Empowerment – Murshidah Said

I am Murshidah Said, a mother and an entrepreneur, hence the term “mompreneur” applies to me too. I am an independent speaker and adviser of personal grooming, corporate image and personal empowerment and transformation for individuals and corporations.

I have always been an entrepreneur most of my adult working life after University days. I did work for a small conference organising company which required lots of travelling and a then moved on  to work for a multinational exhibitions organizing company in 1995, where I was the youngest appointed Conference Manager heading the Asia Pacific Conference Department team in less than a year.

Upon starting my own Convention Management company in 1997, I was appointed to be the Conference Consultant for the Multimedia Supercorridor Conference after being appointed as the emcee for the global IT convention in 1996. I then went on to organize major events like ITS Malaysia in 1998 with Advanstar Communications from USA, and helped IT companies event manage their product launches as part of their PR efforts between 1998-2004. Some of the companies I worked with in my business include Sun Microsystems, ECS Malaysia, ZD Events, Epicor and Porter Novelli.

After 13 years in the events and conference organizing industry, I went on to discover my passion of empowering people and helping them to excel in their life. After overcoming major financial and emotional challenges during business difficulties in 2002-2005, I started working with individuals as a personal coach to coach and empower them to take personal action to transform themselves and their lives.

In 2005, I was trained and certified to be a beauty workshop specialist and since then have been conducting grooming, personal care and makeup programmes to many corporations, institutions and individuals alike. My passion is to help people look great and feel great by gaining more self-confidence and attraction through motivation, inspiration and proper advice on inner and outer personal image. I am often invited to speak at conferences and be an emcee at events. Some of my clients for personal grooming and makeup include Sheraton Imperial Hotel, Westin Hotel, Pan Pacific Hotel, Marina Mandarin Hotel, Damansara Specialist Hospital, National University Hospital of Singapore, Tawakal Hospital. Between the years 2005-2007, I also trained teenagers from the Secondary Schools in Singapore on proper grooming and etiquette, how to gain confidence and public speaking skills as well as given talks of having a healthy lifestyle.

My passion is to empower women and children. To quote Queen Rania of Jordan, “When you educate women, you educate the world”.

Challenges are aplenty for anyone in business and even more so when you have to balance a family life, be a breadwinner and also a mother. For me, I have faced the time when I was so deep in debt and I was broke and almost homeless in KL with an 8 month old child to feed. My husband was just fired from a job he took in KL and he wasn’t paid. Within less than 2 weeks, I managed to raise some money after meeting a complete stranger in KL to offer a business proposal. I started to build back my life and career. What I learned through my lessons in business all these while is to not let setbacks and challenges stop us from ever dreaming our dreams and pursuing our passions. I strongly believe in God’s help coming in the nick of time and also to never be complacent in everything we do especially in business. The Law of Attraction works as long as we allow it to work for us. I learnt to always focus on what we want rather than what we fear or do not want in our lives.

I am still in business, now focusing on reaching to as many people as possible with my programmes and offering ideas and guidance to whoever wants to start a business. For mothers especially who want to start a home business, make sure you set some quality time to build your business, and some quality time to spend with your children. They need you as much as (even more actually) they need the income coming in from your business.

I am raising my toddler at home while working on my training programmes at the same time and I do work out of my home. Have a good care giver if you have to be away from your child for work. Keep your expenses low especially when you are starting out and stay away from credit and loans (especially the cards) even when the credit card sales person seems to nice and helpful !

Best wishes and my love to everyone out there reading this.
